Etsy takes $3.30 from a $30 US order, about 11%, on a $25 item with $5 shipping. That is three fees, all published on Etsy's own help pages: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the whole order including shipping, and a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25. If the buyer came through one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, a further 15% is added and the same sale costs $7.80.
Most quick answers say "6.5%", which is only one of the three. The rest of this page works the fees out at three prices, shows what changes in the UK, and explains the one fee you may not be able to switch off. Our free marketplace fee calculator does the same arithmetic on your own price, and sets Etsy beside Amazon, eBay and TikTok Shop.
How much does Etsy take per sale?
On a US sale, Etsy takes $3.30 from a $30 order ($25 item plus $5 shipping): $0.20 to list, $1.95 in transaction fees (6.5% of $30) and $1.15 to process the payment (3% of $30 plus $0.25). That is 11% of the order. The same three fees at other prices:
| Item + shipping | Order total | Listing | Transaction 6.5% | Processing 3% + $0.25 | Etsy takes | Share of order | You receive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 + $4 | $14 | $0.20 | $0.91 | $0.67 | $1.78 | 12.7% | $12.22 |
| $25 + $5 | $30 | $0.20 | $1.95 | $1.15 | $3.30 | 11.0% | $26.70 |
| $60 + $8 | $68 | $0.20 | $4.42 | $2.29 | $6.91 | 10.2% | $61.09 |
Fees from Etsy's help pages (Etsy Fee Basics; What are the Fees and Taxes for Selling on Etsy?; What are Payment Processing Fees for Selling on Etsy?), read 14 October 2026, for a seller whose bank account is in the US. Example prices are ours. No Offsite Ads, no Etsy Ads, no shipping label bought through Etsy, no sales tax in the order.
The fixed parts, $0.20 to list and $0.25 per payment, are why small items lose a bigger share. On the $14 order they are $0.45 of the $1.78; on the $68 order they are still $0.45 but the percentages do most of the work. "You receive" is before what the item cost you to make and before the postage you actually pay, so it is not profit.

What fees does Etsy charge sellers?
Etsy lists three fees most sellers pay: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee, which is 3% + $0.25 for a US bank account. On top of those come optional or situational fees: Offsite Ads at 15% or 12%, Etsy Ads, shipping labels, a one-time set-up fee and 2.5% currency conversion.
What Etsy publishes, read from its own help pages
- Listing: $0.20 per listing. "The listing fee is a flat rate charge of $0.20 USD per listing." It is charged whether or not the item sells, and "A listing expires after 4 months." Renewing, or selling a second unit from the same listing, is another $0.20.
- Transaction: 6.5%. "Etsy charges 6.5% of the total order amount in your designated listing currency." That includes shipping and gift wrap you charge for.
- Payment processing: 3% + $0.25 in the US. A set rate plus a percent, varying by the country of your bank account, taken from the total sale price including shipping, and sales tax if you charge tax on the listing.
- Offsite Ads: 15%, or 12% for shops past $10,000 in the last 365 days. Charged only when a sale comes through an Etsy ad on another site, and never more than $100 an order.
- Currency conversion: 2.5%, when you list in a different currency from your bank account.
- Set-up fee: one-time, non-refundable. Etsy's page says the "Cost varies by location" and shows it during shop set-up. We could not see the US amount without opening a shop, so it is not in our sums.
Etsy Ads, the ads you choose to run inside Etsy search, are priced by you, and Etsy's fee page says only that "Fees for ads vary." They are left out of every figure here because they are a choice, not a cost of selling.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes, both percentages apply to shipping. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% processing fee are taken on the item price plus the shipping you charge, so $5 of shipping on a US order costs you $0.48 in fees ($0.33 transaction plus $0.15 processing) before you have bought a stamp.
This is the line most sellers miss when they price. A seller who charges exactly what the post office charges is paying Etsy to post the parcel. The fix is arithmetic, not a trick: build the 9.5% into the shipping price or into the item price, whichever your buyers notice less.
Free shipping does not avoid the fee either. It moves the postage into the item price, and the fee follows it there.
How much does Etsy take in the UK?
A UK seller pays 4% + £0.20 to process the payment instead of 3% + $0.25, and a 0.48% Regulatory Operating fee on top. On a £20 item with £5 postage, that is about £2.95 (£1.63 transaction, £1.20 processing, £0.12 regulatory), plus the $0.20 listing fee, which Etsy charges in US dollars.
| UK sale, £25 order | Fee | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction | 6.5% of £25 | £1.63 |
| Payment processing | 4% of £25 + £0.20 | £1.20 |
| Regulatory Operating fee | 0.48% of £25 | £0.12 |
| Listing | $0.20, converted at the day's rate | Not counted |
| Total before listing and VAT | £2.95 |
UK processing rate from Etsy's payment processing fee table ("United Kingdom 4% + 0.20 GBP"), Regulatory Operating fee from Etsy's page on that fee, both read 14 October 2026. Example prices are ours.
There is one more line a UK seller who is not VAT registered can see. Etsy charges VAT on its seller fees and processing fees, and its fee page says only "VAT may vary", so we have not put a figure on it. Your Etsy VAT invoice shows the real amount.
What are Etsy Offsite Ads fees, and can you opt out?
Offsite Ads cost 15% of the order (12% once a shop has made $10,000 in a 365-day period), capped at $100 an order. On the $30 example, that turns $3.30 of fees into $7.80, or 26% of the order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; shops over it cannot.
Etsy's own words on the opt-out are plain: "If your shop has never made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365-day period, you can opt out of Offsite Ads." Past that line, its table says the shop is "required to participate for the lifetime of your shop". The fee applies when a buyer clicks one of these ads and buys from your shop within 30 days.
Two things follow. A small shop should decide deliberately whether to stay in, because a 15% fee on a cheap item can wipe out its margin. And a growing shop should price for the worst case before it passes $10,000, because after that the choice is gone. The cap only matters on big orders: "The Offsite Ad fee will never exceed $100 for an order, regardless of the order total."
How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?
The fees you can count before the first sale are $0.20 per listing, so $4 to list 20 items for four months, plus a one-time set-up fee whose amount Etsy says varies by location. Etsy shows that set-up fee during shop set-up; we could not see the US figure without opening a shop, so we have not stated one.
Everything else is charged on sales, which makes Etsy cheap to start and expensive to grow on. That is the opposite of a website with a monthly plan, which costs money before you sell and less per sale after. Which one wins depends on how many orders you take, and it is worth working out with your own numbers rather than taking anyone's rule of thumb.
The costs that are not Etsy's are usually bigger: materials, packaging and postage, and the tax on whatever is left. How to set the tax aside as it arrives is in side hustle tax explained, and the costs people forget are in the hidden costs of starting a business.
How do you price an Etsy item so the fees are covered?
Work out the fees on the whole order, not the item, and price so that what lands covers the item's cost, the real postage and your time. On a US order, budget 9.5% of the order plus $0.45 for the three standard fees, and 15% more for any sale that might come through Offsite Ads.
On the $25 example, 9.5% of $30 is $2.85, and $0.45 brings it to $3.30, which is the figure in the table. It works because the percentages and the fixed parts do not change with the price. The quick check before listing anything: if the item made you less than you want after $3.30, it will make you even less on the sale that came through an ad.
This is the fee half of pricing. The other half, what buyers will pay for your item compared with others like it, is a market question no calculator answers. Etsy's place among platforms that pay you to build on them, and what else sells there, is in companies that pay you to build on their platform.
The honest hard part
The fees are the easy part, because Etsy publishes every one of them. The hard part is that the fee page is not where the money is decided. The price buyers will pay, the number of listings you renew because they did not sell, and whether a sale came through an ad do much more to your income than the difference between 6.5% and 7%.
The second hard part is that the fees change. The help pages we read show no "last updated" date, so a figure copied from them into a guide carries no date either. Treat every figure here as true on the date we read it, and check the help pages before a big decision.
The third is that Etsy's fees depend on where your bank account is. A seller in Canada, Australia, India or Europe pays a different processing rate, and several countries add a regulatory fee. This page works through the US and the UK only.
