Questions
How much does Etsy really take from a sale?
More than the 6.5% most people quote. Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee (3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK), both on the item and the postage, plus a listing fee. In the UK there is also a regulatory operating fee, and VAT on the fees if you are not VAT registered. Put your own price in and the breakdown shows each line.
Why do the fees include the postage I charge?
Because Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Walmart and TikTok Shop all take their percentage on the whole order, postage included. A seller who charges £5 postage on a £20 item pays fees on £25. Poshmark and Vinted are the exceptions: the buyer pays postage through their own label.
Why do your fees show a date?
Because marketplace fees change, often more than once a year, and most fee calculators and chatbot answers never say when their numbers were checked. Every fee here was read off the marketplace’s own seller-fee page on the date shown, with a link to that page. If you are about to decide on it, follow the link and confirm nothing has moved.
Is the marketplace that keeps the most always the right one?
No. Fees are what a sale costs; buyers are what you pay for. The marketplace where your item actually sells, at the price you want, can beat a cheaper one where it sits unseen. Use this to know the size of the trade, then decide where your buyers are.
