A business coach typically costs $75 to $150 an hour, going by Upwork's median rates for business coaches. Coaching directory Noomii puts one-on-one sessions for small businesses at $200 to $600 a session and executive-level coaching at $2,000 to $10,000 a month. At the other end, SCORE mentoring for US businesses is free.
The price follows who the coach works with more than what they teach: a coach for a first-year founder and a coach for a CEO can cover the same topics at ten times the fee.
How much does a business coach charge per hour?
On Upwork, business coaches typically charge $75 to $150 an hour: "Business Coaches on Upwork Cost $75–$150/hr." Upwork's own guide splits that by experience as "Entry-level: $50-$75/hour", "Intermediate: $75-$150/hour" and "Expert: $200+/hour", with higher rates for coaching aimed at senior executives.

Prices from each source's own page, 13 October 2026. US dollars. Upwork's figure is "typical hourly rate ranges of certain historical contracts worldwide." Clarity.fm's range is the lowest and highest per-minute rate on its business experts page when we read it.
Upwork adds that "What clients will pay is subject to negotiations with talent," and that the figures come from contracts worldwide. A coach in a high-cost US city usually prices above the middle of that range.
How much does business coaching cost per month?
Monthly coaching runs from a few hundred dollars to $10,000. Noomii, a coaching directory, writes that "One-on-one sessions range from $200-$600 per session for small businesses. Executive-level coaching may cost $2,000-$10,000 per month. Group coaching often falls between."
A small business owner meeting a coach twice a month at Noomii's session range would pay $400 to $1,200 a month; that is our arithmetic, not a published plan. Group coaching, where several owners share one coach, sits between that and the executive price.
Can you pay a business coach per minute?
Yes, for one-off advice. Clarity.fm sells calls with business experts by the minute, and the rates on its business page ran from $1.67 to $83.33 a minute when we read it. At $5 a minute, a common rate there, a 30-minute call costs $150; at $83.33 a minute, the same call costs $2,500.
Paying per minute suits a single question: a pricing decision, a hire, a contract. It is not coaching in the usual sense, because there is no follow-up and nobody holds the owner to a plan.
Is there free business coaching?
Yes. SCORE mentoring is free for US businesses. In SCORE's words, "SCORE mentoring is a free service offered to any aspiring or established owners of a U.S.-based business," and "Mentoring is always free, for the life of your business." Mentors are volunteers with business experience, and sessions are one-on-one.
Free mentoring is the right first step for most new owners. A paid coach starts to make sense when the owner needs more time, a specialist, or someone accountable to them rather than to a program.
How much should a new business coach charge?
Start around $75 to $150 an hour, or $200 to $400 a session, the middle of Upwork's range and the lower half of Noomii's session range. That is a price a small business owner can say yes to, and it leaves room to rise once there are results to point to.
The coaching profession is growing on volume rather than price. The International Coaching Federation's latest study estimates the profession "generated an estimated $5.34 billion (USD) over the past year," and reports that most coaches expect more income from "more clients and more coaching sessions — and not higher fees." For a new coach, a full calendar at a fair price beats an empty one at a premium.
Setting a first price without past clients is covered in how to price a service with no track record. If your expertise is AI rather than general business, how to start an AI consulting business and how much to charge for AI services show what that work sells for.
Is a business coach worth the money?
It depends on what the owner would pay for the same help elsewhere. Next to a free SCORE mentor, a coach at $400 a month has to bring more time, a specialism, or real accountability. Noomii puts the case as "One expensive mistake costs more than years of coaching fees"; that is a sales argument, and the owner is the one who can test it.
A practical test is to ask for one paid session before agreeing to a monthly plan. If one session produces a decision or a change the owner can name, the plan is worth considering. For help with tasks rather than decisions, a virtual assistant is often the cheaper fix.
The honest hard part
Most business coaches do not publish prices, so the figures here are a marketplace's averages, a directory's ranges and one per-minute marketplace. The real price is usually set on a discovery call, and it moves with the coach's reputation more than with any published rate.
The second hard part is that "business coach" is not a regulated title. Anyone can use it, so the range of quality is as wide as the range of prices. Certifications such as ICF's exist, but they certify coaching skill, not business results.
The third is measuring the return. Coaching works on the owner's decisions, so its effect is mixed in with everything else that happens in the business. A coach who promises a specific revenue figure is promising something nobody can attribute.
